14-Day Thailand Road Trip: Bangkok, Koh Tao, Phuket, and Krabi Uncovered

Just completed a fantastic 14-day road trip through Thailand's most stunning landscapes and lively cities—here's your guide to doing it too, with all the insider tips and must-do activities for an unforgettable journey!

I wrapped up a phenomenal 14-day road trip across Thailand, hitting iconic spots like Bangkok, Koh Tao, Phuket, and Krabi. This guide is your all-access pass to replicate this adventure, tested and proven for fun. The roads in Thailand are tailor-made for epic journeys, so here’s how you can make the most of it.

Pre-Trip Essentials

Book a car for the entirety of your stay, arranging both pickup and drop-off at Bangkok Airport. This simplifies your travel logistics immensely.

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok

If your flight lands in the afternoon, take it easy and spend your first night in Bangkok. There’s no better way to adjust to the city vibes than an evening at a rooftop bar, overlooking the sprawling urban landscape as it lights up at dusk.

Day 2: Bangkok to Chumphon

Kick off the road trip with a drive from Bangkok to the Chumphon area. The journey covers approximately 380 km and should take about 6 hours. You can check the route on Google Maps here.

Chumphon might seem like a sleepy town, but it’s brimming with affordable accommodations, from budget-friendly hotels to luxurious stays, accommodating every type of traveler. Wander around local markets, dive into small local shops, and peek into a less explored part of Thailand to see how the locals live.

Day 3: Setting Sail to Koh Tao

Depart from your hotel early to ensure you leave by 10 AM to reach the Lomprayah Pier. Catch the 1:15 PM ferry to Koh Tao for around 700 Thai Baht. There’s dedicated parking at the pier where you can safely leave your car.

Upon arriving in Koh Tao, you’ll be greeted by a bustling crowd at the port. Catch a local jeep taxi (costing between 100-300 Thai Baht) to your hotel. Speaking of hotels, Koh Tao’s options are as varied as the fish in its seas—from budget hostels to luxurious five-star resorts.

What to Do in Koh Tao

The island is a haven for adventurers. Rent a scooter to zip around (cautiously, as roads can be steep and tricky), visit the island’s highest point for a stunning 360-degree view, or simply relax by the beach. Spend about 2-3 nights soaking in the vibrant island culture.

Day 6: Journey to Phuket

Take an 11 AM boat back to the mainland and hop into your car headed for Phuket. The drive from Chumphon Lomprayah Pier to Patong in Phuket covers around 300 km and takes approximately 7 hours, with the route available on Google Maps here.

Activities in Phuket

Engage in water sports, spend time on the beaches, and don’t miss the Big Buddha for a fantastic view over the island. I’d advise against renting scooters here due to frequent police checkpoints. Experience the lively street food sensations that Phuket offers.

Day 10: On to Krabi

The drive from Patong to Krabi is the most picturesque leg of the trip. Keep your camera handy for this stunning 3-hour journey covering about 180 km. Check the route here.

Krabi Highlights

Take a boat ride to nearby islands like Phi Phi, marvel at the towering oceanic rock formations, and rent a scooter to explore the local landscape. Learn more about Thai cultural practices as you explore.

Day 12: Return to Bangkok

Take your time driving back to Bangkok, stopping at any favorite spots you’ve discovered along the way. Spend your last night enjoying some of Bangkok’s famed night market treats, like grilled seafood, fresh fruits, and local desserts. Reflect on the essential Thai etiquette you’ve observed during your travels.

Day 14: Farewell Thailand

Drop off your car at Bangkok Airport and board your plane home, already dreaming about your next adventure.
